Universities Australia Media Release: MyUniversity assisting student choice but more work needed

MyUniversity assisting student choice but more work needed

The MyUniversity website, launched today by the Tertiary Education Minister, Senator Chris Evans, has the potential to serve as a useful source of information for students making choices about their university education according to the peak body representing all Australian universities.

Belinda Robinson, Chief Executive of Universities Australia, has provided cautious support for the initiative but has expressed concern about the accuracy and reliability of the information provided.

"Prospective students, making one of the biggest decisions of their lives, must have confidence that the information available to them presents an accurate and complete picture of the options they are considering," said Ms Robinson.

"Getting it right is also essential for the reputation of universities operating in an increasingly competitive market brought on by the demand-driven enrolment system.

"We don't believe the MyUniversity website is there yet, particularly in relation to attrition rates, staff: student ratios, the entry score cut-of search function, course mapping and searchability.

"While the Government has addressed a number of key concerns raised by Universities Australia throughout the consultation period, further improvements are required.

"We welcome the Government's acknowledgement of the need for further work and look forward to assisting them with improvements to ensure students have access to the best available information.

"In the meantime, those problems that can be fixed now should be addressed as a matter of urgency," said Ms Robinson.

Ms Robinson said that factors other than straight metrics and hard numbers are also important in student decision-making.

"The MyUniversity website should be seen as a supplement, not a substitute, for other sources of information.

"The institutions themselves provide the best, most current and comprehensive information available."
